Samsung is offering a treat for Sprint subscribers in the form of an exclusive Galaxy S5 version, which has just surfaced as the Galaxy S5 Sport.

When Samsung launched its latest Galaxy S5, everyone was expecting several spinoffs of the smartphone, in typical Samsung fashion. The company then went on and launched a Galaxy S5 Active and a Galaxy K, both of which have leaked before becoming official. The new Sprint-exclusive Galaxy S5 Sport, however, is a surprise.

"Sprint is stepping up its presence in the growing health and fitness markets, announcing today the launch of an exclusive device from Samsung Telecommunications America and a collaboration with health and fitness market leaders Under Armour and MapMyFitness to offer mobile solutions for today's active lifestyles," reads Sprint's press release on Monday, June 23.

"Sprint will launch on Friday, July 25 the Samsung Galaxy S 5 Sport, an exclusive new Spark-enabled smartphone with both the hardware and software for today's health-conscious users. Among the handset's many features is S Health, an integrated mobile health platform to access health info, map out workouts, and make healthier eating choices. It even monitors heart rate before and after activity with a built-in heart-rate monitor. Samsung's exclusive Activity Zone app is preloaded on Galaxy S 5 Sport offering the ability to open active lifestyle features, including a barometer, compass, flashlight and stopwatch from a single screen."

At a first glance, this new Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport seems to be a combination between the original Galaxy S5 and the AT&T-exclusive Galaxy S5 Active. The new model seems to be more rugged than the flagship, yet not as rugged as the S5 Active. The Galaxy S5 Sport also comes with a rear cover with a new design, as well as physical Android buttons.

The Galaxy S5 Sport is also IP67-certified for dust- and water-resistance, but it's not the military-grade certification found on the Galaxy S5 Active. In terms of specifications, the new model for Sprint seems closer to the original flagship. It packs a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory, a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front shooter.

Connectivity options include 4G LTE support, including for Sprint Spark, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC, while a 2,800 mAh battery keeps things up and running. On the software side, the Galaxy S5 Sport runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box.

The new Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport will become available from July 25 from Sprint, and interested buyers can now pre-register to receive more information about the device. The smartphone will be come in Electric Blue and Cherry Red color options and will be available for $0 down, followed by 24 equal monthly payments of $27.09. For a limited time, Sprint will also slash $50 off the price of the Gear Fit when purchasing a Galaxy S5 Sport.
