Sony PlayStation consoles outsold Microsoft Xbox units 3:1 in Q1 2014
Alexandra BurlacuIf there was any doubt as to which gaming consoles are more popular, Sony's PlayStation apparently outsold Microsoft's Xbox three to one.
Sony has just released its financial report for the first quarter of this year, from April 1 to June 30, revealing impressive results. More specifically, the company's PlayStation sales have significantly outperformed sales of Microsoft's Xbox systems in the quarter.
"Sales increased 95.7% year-on-year (an 86% increase on a constant currency basis) to 257.5 billion yen (2,550 million U.S. dollars). This increase was primarily due to the contribution from sales of PS4 hardware which was launched in November 2013, as well as a significant increase in network services revenue accompanying the launch of the PS4. Sales to external customers increased 101% year-on-year," reveals the financial report (PDF).
"Operating income of 4.3 billion yen (43 million U.S. dollars) was recorded, compared to an operating loss of 16.4 billion yen the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. This significant improvement was primarily due to the above-mentioned increase in sales, partly offset by a decrease in PlayStation 3 ("PS3") software sales."
The company has not offered any exact numbers for how many PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 consoled it has sold, but the combined sales of PlayStation units total 3.5 million units in the first quarter of this year.
It's also worth pointing out that sales of Sony PlayStation units in the first quarter of 2014 are significantly higher compared to the same quarter last year, when the company sold 1.1 million consoles.
Microsoft, meanwhile, released its first quarter financial results last week, revealing that it has shipped 1.1 million Xbox consoles in total. This means that Sony's PlayStation consoles outsold Microsoft Xbox units by 3:1. In other words, for every gaming console Microsoft sold, Sony sold three.
This allowed Sony to generate an operating profit instead of a loss despite the fact that sales of PS3 units and games have dropped.
Based on the two companies' financial results, it is clear that so far Sony PlayStation consoles have enjoyed greater success compared to Microsoft Xbox units. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will be able to boost sales in the future, but Sony has a significant edge for now.
