Motorola ‘Shamu’ smartphone leaks again – Is this the Google Nexus X?

The rumored Motorola "Shamu" handset, expected to launch as the next-generation Google Nexus smartphone, has surfaced in a more detailed report, complete with some design details.

Google has yet to launch a new Nexus device this year and anticipation is building up ahead of the expected product unveilings. The company is rumored to release two new Nexus devices in the near future - an HTC Nexus 9 tablet and a Nexus smartphone made in collaboration with Motorola.

This purported Nexus smartphone from Motorola has popped up before with the codename Shamu and will reportedly launch as the Nexus X, as the Nexus 6 branding would raise some copyright infringement issues.

A new report from 9to5Google now confirms some of the previously rumored Motorola Shamu specs, while also offering some new details regarding the handset's design and features.

According to this new report, the Motorola Shamu will sport a 5.92-inch QHD (Quad HD) display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a pixel density of 498 pixels per inch (ppi), as opposed to the 5.2-inch screen was previously rumored. Other specs reportedly include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage capacity, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter, and a large 3,200 mAh battery to keep things up and running.

In terms of design, this purported Motorola Shamu handset will reportedly look very similar to the second-generation Moto X, which recently made its debut. In fact, 9to5Google claims that it's a "scaled up 2nd generation Moto X with some minor tweaks to make the larger size easier to use." Although the resemblance is uncanny, there are some changes in design between the two handsets. The Motorola Shamu, for instance, has the ports in the same location as the new Moto X, but the power button and volume rocker are towards the middle of the device.

It remains unclear at this point just what the round hole on the rear of the smartphone, just below the camera, will house. Google usually releases Nexus devices with prominent Nexus branding, but that hole may indicate that the Motorola Shamu could come with the company's M logo on its back, just like the Moto X. At the same time, that opening could also house a fingerprint scanner, but nothing is confirmed at this point.

In fact, everything is based solely on leaks and speculation so far, as Google has made no official comment or announcement just yet. Nevertheless, the company is rumored to unveil new Nexus hardware with Android L in mid-October, so more details should become available shortly. In the meantime, take everything with a grain of salt.
