China celebrated Singles Day with a slew of attractive offers and Xiaomi had a field day, cashing in over ¥1,000,000,000 in just 12 hours.

Each year on 11.11, China celebrates Singles Day. The event dates back to the '90s, when it started out as a special day for single people. Over the years, Alibaba and other e-commerce companies in China started offering increasingly attractive deals, turning Singles Day into the largest shopping day in the world. China's Singles Day outshines even the U.S.' Cyber Monday when it comes to sales, and this year was no different.

Alibaba, for instance, sold $2 billion worth of products in the first two hours alone on Singles Day. A big part of those products were from mobile companies, and Xiaomi was apparently the star.

It's not the first time we hear of impressive sales achievements when Xiaomi is involved, and by the look of things, it will most likely not be the last time either. Xiaomi managed to sell 720,000 Mi phones in 12 hours of Singles Day, raking in 1 billion yuan ($163 million).

Hugo Barra, who left Google to head Xiaomi's international expansion, announced the impressive milestones Xiaomi hit in the first 12 hours of Singles Day in China. Here are the details, according to Barra's post on Google Plus:

  • In just 4 minutes and 48 seconds, Xiaomi had raked in ¥100 million ($16 million);
  • Within four hours, the figure went up to ¥500 million ($90 million), which is what the company saw last year from full-day sales;
  • In 12 hours, Xiaomi saw a whopping ¥1 billion ($163 million);
  • In 12 hours, Xiaomi sold 720,000 Mi phones;

These impressive figures not only show the great success of Singles Day in China, but also the amazing rise of Xiaomi, and the high demand for Mi phones. Xiaomi may not enjoy wide popularity in the Western world, but it's a rising force in China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other fast-growing markets in Asia.

Dubbed "the Apple of China," Xiaomi has rapidly risen to success and hit one impressive achievement after another, with no signs of slowing down. Its latest achievement proves, yet again, that good devices with affordable price tags sell like hot cakes, and Xiaomi is a true phenomenon in China.
