The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is apparently beating the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus by a 3-to-1 margin, if a new report turns out to be accurate.

Smartphones have become increasingly larger in recent years and the phablet trend shows no signs of dying down. Apple held its ground for as long as it could, refusing to launch larger iPhones while competitors were selling heaps of super-sized smartphones, but this year the company joined the phablet party with its new generation of iPhones.

The iPhone 6 sports a 4.7-inch screen while the iPhone 6 Plus boasts a massive 5.5-inch display, venturing into phablet territory. Despite the wide popularity of phablets, however, a new report indicates that consumers prefer the smaller iPhone 6 over the larger iPhone 6 Plus.

According to new information from a sales breakdown by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, which analyzes the devices' performance in their first month of U.S. availability, the iPhone 6 beat the iPhone 6 Plus by 3-to-1 in terms of sales. As Apple Insider reports, analyst Steven Milunovich of UBS has summarized the data, concluding that the iPhone 6 accounted for 68 percent of all iPhone sales, while the iPhone 6 Plus made up roughly 23 - 24 percent.

At the same time, this also means that Apple's latest smartphones together accounted for as much as 91 percent of all iPhone sales during their first month on the market. The remaining units were iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C models from last year.

Last year, by comparison, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C accounted for roughly 84 percent of total iPhone sales after one month on the market, indicating greater adoption rates for newer models. This means that Apple fans are more interested in the latest models than the previous generations, despite the fact that older models usually get notable discounts once a new generation launches.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus stirred lots of interest upon their debut, albeit the larger model soon went under a firestorm of criticism over the widely known #BendGate issue. This may be a factor in consumers' decision to go for the smaller iPhone 6, which may explain the sales margins. The latest iPhones are now available in more than 70 countries worldwide and their popularity continues to grow. For now, the iPhone 6 seems to be in more demand, but it remains to be seen whether things will remain the same.
