Sony Z Ultra GPE getting Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update now
Alexandra BurlacuThe latest Android 5.0 Lollipop continues its journey and is reportedly rolling out to another device now: the Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition (GPE).
Google has introduced its new Android 5.0 Lollipop back in mid-October, and is gradually rolling out the new OS version to more devices. As always, GPE devices have special status when it comes to receiving updates, as they are among the first in line to receive new software treats.
The Sony Z Ultra GPE launched back in December 2013 as the company's very first GPE device. This model is essentially the same Xperia Z Ultra as the original model, albeit with more Google in it.
In other words, the Sony Z Ultra GPE has the exact same specs and features on board as the original Xperia Z Ultra, but comes with a pure Android experience on board, free from the manufacturer's bloatware and UI.
As a reminder, the super-sized smartphone boasts a massive 6.4-inch Full HD Triluminos display with 1080p resolution and packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor under the hood, clocked at 2.2GHz and paired with Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Other specs include 16GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter, pen input with stylus, and IP55 & IP58 certification to make it dust-resistant and waterproof.
The device launched with Android 4.4 KitKat on board, but it now seems that it's ready to taste the new Lollipop flavor. Neither Sony nor Google have made any official announcement so far, but Sony Z Ultra GPE users are reportedly seeing the Android 5.0 update already.
"We've been receiving reports from readers that the Lollipop update is rolling out to the Sony Z Ultra GPE. While there's no official confirmation yet, it looks like the update brings features like lock screen notifications, battery saving mode, Smart Lock, and more," Android Central reports.
The update is rolling out over-the-air (OTA), which means that it can take a while to reach all devices. The package weighs in at 397MB, but users ought to have 500MB of free space for the installation, users reported on an Android Central Forums thread.
If you have an Xperia Z Ultra GPE device, drop by our comment section below and let us know whether you have received the update and, if so, tell us how it fares.
