Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition comes in ‘Original Grey,’ limited 12,300 units
Alexandra BurlacuSony is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its iconic gaming console and has a special-edition PlayStation 4 ready to mark the occasion.
It's been 20 years since Sony first launched its original PlayStation console back on Dec. 3, 1994, and the company has come a long way since then, gaining increasingly more fans along the way. The Sony PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition now comes in the original gray color option to celebrate 20 years of PlayStation and its availability is quite limited.
"We sincerely thank you for joining us on our exciting 20-year journey. You have made every bump and scrape we took along the way worthwhile. And there's so much more to come!" Sony boasted in a company blog post on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
"Sporting the same 'Original Grey' finish as the original PlayStation and packaged in a commemorative box, PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition will be priced at €499 and limited to 12,300 units worldwide, reflecting the launch date of the original PlayStation."
The original gray color now graces not only the chassis of the PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition, but also the controllers and other accessories.
Given the special status of this limited-edition version, the Sony PlayStation 4 Anniversary Edition will not be available via all of the traditional retail channels in the SCEE region.
"Look out for more information soon on how you can get your hands on one of these highly collectable consoles," Sony further added in its blog post.
As a reminder, Sony launched its very first gaming console back in December 1994, followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000, the PlayStation 3 in 2006, and the PlayStation 4 in 2013. The company also launched its PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2004, and PS Vita in 2011.
The latest Sony PlayStation 4 has enjoyed great success since its launch, significantly outselling rival Xbox One. The new-generation console received its last update back in October, with software version 2.00, and Sony announced in November that version 2.01 was en route already.
In addition to the original gray PlayStation 4 20th Anniversary Edition console, Sony is also celebrating the occasion by offering some anniversary discounts. To learn more about these offers, head over to the company's PlayStation blog at this link.
