Google confirms discontinuing Nexus 5, will still sell it through Q1 2015
Alexandra BurlacuGoogle has confirmed that it has stopped production of its Nexus 5, which means the smartphone will no longer be available once existing stock sells out.
The 2013 Nexus 5 has proved to be one of the best-selling Nexus devices of all times, and many still consider it to be a very capable smartphone. Concerns about the Nexus 5 availability started to arise a few days ago, when the red and white color options of the smartphone quietly disappeared from the Google Play store, and the company has now confirmed that it indeed plans to discontinue the handset.
Speaking to Tech Radar, a Google representative said that the company will continue selling existing stock of the Nexus 5, but it will no longer be making new units.
"Once they're gone, they're gone, so we'd suggest people get them while they can," the Google spokesperson told Tech Radar.
Google also told The Verge in an emailed statement that it will continue selling the Nexus 5 for a while next year as well.
"Nexus 5 will continue to be available for sale on Google Play and through select retailers in Q1 2015," the company told The Verge.
Google has launched a new Nexus 6 smartphone made in collaboration with Motorola this year, but the latest iteration is quite hard to come by. Unveiled back in mid-October, the Nexus 6 still seems to face very limited availability, with stock vanishing in no time.
The new-generation Nexus flagship smartphone sports notable improvements on all fronts compared to its predecessor, but it also comes with a considerably higher price tag. Many Nexus fans still prefer last year's iteration due to its more compact form factor, good specs, and affordable price, even if it's not the latest anymore.
As a reminder, the Nexus 5 sports a 4.95-inch IPS display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor under the hood, clocked at 2.26GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM. Other specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1.3-megapixel front shooter, and a 2,300 mAh battery. Being part of the Nexus family, the Nexus 5 also received the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS.
All in all, those who are still interested in purchasing a Google Nexus 5 smartphone may want to do so while they still can, as the handset will not be available for long.
