Rumors of a new Samsung Galaxy E series can finally be put to rest, as the company has officially unveiled its new Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7 smartphones.

In addition to launching the metal-clad Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 handsets in India, Samsung has also taken the wraps off two brand new mid-range smartphones: the Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7, part of the rumored Galaxy E series.

"Samsung Electronics launched GALAXY E7 and GALAXY E5 in India. These powerful and compact smartphones, targeting young customers, also offer a superior viewing and best selfie experience," the company announced in an official blog post on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

"As we embark in this New Year, Samsung heralds a new and exciting era with the introduction of compact, stylish and best-in-class technology smartphones in India. Continuing our legacy of setting new standards for customer-centric innovation, we are focused on redefining the concept of offering revolutionary devices and expand our leadership position within the smartphone market."

Both handsets in the new Galaxy E series offer what Samsung calls "Hybrid dual-SIM," allowing the second SIM card slot to serve as a microSD card slot as well, and both aim to offer good performance on a budget.

Samsung Galaxy E5 specs

The Samsung Galaxy E5 sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED display and packs a 1.2GHz quad-core processor under the hood, albeit the company has yet to specify the exact CPU model. Other specs include 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera with auto focus and LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The Galaxy E5 further features 16GB of internal storage capacity, microSD support for additional memory of up to 64GB, and a 2,400 mAh battery. Connectivity options consist of 3G (HSPA+), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB 2.0, and A-GPS/GLONASS.

Samsung Galaxy A7 specs

The higher-end Galaxy E7, meanwhile, comes with a larger 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor (also unspecified), 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage capacity, expandable via microSD. Other specs include a 13-megapixel rear camera with auto focus and LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. Connectivity options are the same as for the Galaxy E5.

Selfie Power

Both the Galaxy E5 and Galaxy E7 smartphones feature enhanced selfie modes such as wide angle selfie, selfie voice command, selfie with palm gesture, as well as neat beauty face features. Other key software features include ultra power saving mode, multi screen, and private mode.

The two new smartphones part of the Samsung Galaxy E series are expected to make their commercial debut in India toward the end of this month, and sport lower prices compared to the Galaxy A series. Samsung has yet to detail global availability.
