Apple Watch launch day pre-orders outperformed Android Wear’s first year sales
Alexandra BurlacuThe new Apple Watch has reportedly trumped all Android Wear sales already, raking in one million pre-orders in the U.S. on April 10.
Apple unveiled its first smartwatch a good while ago, back in September, but the Apple Watch did not go on sale until now. In fact, even now the gadget is still not available for real, but at least it went up for pre-order. Nevertheless, the Apple Watch seems to be off to a strong start.
According to research company Slice Intelligence, Apple saw a whopping one million pre-orders for its smartwatch in the U.S. on April 10. As many as 957,000 U.S. customers reportedly rushed to be among the first ones to purchase the new Apple Watch, although they will not actually get the device until April 24 at the earliest.
With one million pre-orders already, the Apple Watch has significantly outperformed Android Wear devices. All throughout 2014, roughly 720,000 Android Wear gadgets shipped, according to Canalys.
Slice Intelligence based its data on a panel of two million online shoppers. The company further reveals that most buyers - 62 percent - chose the lower-end, cheaper Apple Watch Sport model, and apparently consumers ordered an average of 1.3 watches each.
"Despite ho-hum reviews, even by some of the most ardent Apple fans, Slice Intelligence estimates that 957,000 people in the U.S. pre-ordered an Apple Watch on Friday, the first day the watch was available for sale. According to ereceipt data from a panel of two million online shoppers, each Apple Watch buyer ordered an average of 1.3 watches, spending $503.83 per watch. Those ordering an Apple Watch Sport spent $382.83 per watch and those ordering the Apple Watch spent $707.04," Slice Intelligence reports.
"Among those buying an Apple Watch, 72 percent purchased an Apple product in the past two years (iPhone, Apple computer or iPad), and 21 percent of them pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus mere months ago. Nearly one-third purchased two Apple products and 11 percent bought all three devices, in addition to their new watch."
The report further notes that many Apple Watch fans who chose to invest in pricier models went for the cheapest band, most of them choosing a black or white Sport band.
The Apple Watch hasn't garnered only positive reviews, but it seems to be widely successful nonetheless. Android Wear devices include gadgets from Motorola, LG, and Samsung, yet Apple has somehow managed to sell more Apple Watch devices in one day than all Android Wear device makers sold until the end of last year.
