Nexus tablet owners have a new update headed their way, as Google has released Android 5.1.1 for the Nexus 10 and the Nexus 7 (both generations).

The new Android 5.1.1 update is minor, but aims to fix a few bugs that slipped into the previous release. The rollout has officially begun for Nexus devices, with the Nexus 10 and both generations of the Nexus 7 as the first ones to get it.

The update was already expected, as it recently popped up on the Nexus Player. Google has yet to detail just what bug fixes and improvements this new Android 5.1.1 version will bring to the table, but the update aims to patch some things up and add stability improvements.

The Nexus 10 has already started receiving the new Android 5.1.1 upgrade as an over-the-air (OTA) file, but the two generations of the Nexus 7 only have factory images available for now. The OTA should kick off in a few days for the Nexus 7 tablets as well, so users who don't know how to handle factory images to install the update are advised to wait for the OTA download.

This release comes after Android 5.1, which arrived not too long ago as an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Amid the usual mix of bug fixes and improvements, Android 5.1 also brought some neat new features to enhance the overall experience. The most notable new feature is called Device Protection, which aims to deter device theft. In case you lose or misplace your device, this protection will keep it locked until you log in with your Google account credentials. Otherwise, it will remain locked even if someone tries a factory data reset.

As previously mentioned, the new Android 5.1.1 update is now rolling out OTA for the Nexus 10. The first-generation Nexus 7 and the 2013 Nexus 7 models, meanwhile, have factory images available for the update, with the OTA likely to commence shortly. If you don't want to wait for the OTA to roll out, head over to Google's website at this link and get the factory images. Google also offers some instructions on how to flash your device, so make sure to check them out before proceeding.
