The latest Windows 10 OS will roll out later this year and the Microsoft Lumia 640 will be among the first smartphones to get it.

Microsoft has so far focused on budget-friendly devices this year, and has already revealed several handsets with attractive price tags, while also promising a neat software experience.

The new Lumia 640 made its debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 back in early March, alongside a larger Lumia 640 XL phablet. Both devices ship with Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Denim out of the box, but the company promised at launch that Windows 10 will arrive as an upgrade once it's ready to roll out.

In fact, Microsoft plans to upgrade most Windows Phone handsets to its latest Windows 10, but hardware limitations will make some features incompatible. Nevertheless, the budget-friendly Lumia 640 will be among the very first smartphones to receive Windows 10, a company executive has revealed.

More specifically, a two-week-old video has gone virtually unnoticed until now, although it reveals exciting information. The video in question features Ossi Korpella, General Manager of Microsoft's Scandinavian division, announcing that the Microsoft Lumia 640 will be one of the first Windows Phone devices to receive Windows 10.

The executive makes no mention of the Lumia 640 XL variant, which made its debut at the same time as the Lumia 640, but the phablet should receive the same treatment once Windows 10 for phones starts rolling out.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL have already stirred plenty of interest since their debut due to their good specifications and budget-friendly price tags, and a free upgrade to the latest Windows 10 will only make them more attractive.

No information is currently available regarding when Windows 10 for phones will be ready to roll out to existing Windows Phone handsets, but it's expected to be a while after the new OS hits the desktop. Microsoft is farther along with the development of Windows 10 for desktop, and phones will receive the OS afterwards.

The company should provide more information as it gets closer to the public release of its new OS, and we'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as more information comes to light regarding the Windows 10 rollout.
