Microsoft Kills MSN Apps for Health & Fitness, Travel and Food & Drinks

Staff Reporter

Microsoft did a bold move after they axed MSN apps on iOS and Android. These apps, including Travel & Food, Health and Fitness as well as Travel, will no longer have developer support and are being shut down.

Microsoft also pulls out support on Photosynth. Though they did not deleted that app, the users are free to use it on their own.

Photosynth has a note on their website saying, "We are doing this because the new Photosynth Preview technology and its cloud processing is a more immersive way to capture a place than the spherical panoramas that our apps produce."

Users with panoramas created by using the Microsoft app are told to move their work to Photosynth.net. The files will then be hosted by the Photosynth cloud. Users can edit their privacy preference for their work.

MSN apps will also be discontinued by Microsoft. These three apps will be officially closed on Sept. 28, according to Windows Central.  The Health & Fitness app, however, will say until Nov. 1.

"We regularly evaluate our business to ensure we're focused on the areas where our users find the most value," Microsoft said in a statement. "We will continue to support those apps with broad consumer appeal including News, Weather, Sports and Money, which will be made available as apps on Windows 10 and will remain cross platform."

The Cortana app, Microsoft's own Siri, will also be affected by this move. If, before, a user asks for travel update then they will be directed to the MSN travel app. Now, they will just be forwarded to the website.

According to Zdnet, Neowin reported that Microsoft is not doing this because they are slowly pulling away from Bing but because they are considering the "broad consumer appeal" of the apps. Basically, if they see that the apps are not catering to a larger audience, they might see it as unnecessary.
