Samsung Might Introduce New Smartphones With Body Fat Tracking Feature
Staff ReporterSamsung is always on the lookout for the "next big thing" but this revolutionary idea of having a smartphone measure the person's body fat can really put them to the top.
It has not been confirmed yet, but a Samsung patent was spotted by VentureBeat. According to Tech Times, there are existing smartphones and smartwearables that gives the users the ability to monitor health-related metrics like calories burned, heart rate, miles walked and even sleep. However, none of them has the ability to immediately provide a body fat measurement.
With the new patent registration, Samsung is about to change that. The patent describes the process as a method of acquiring the body fat by using the four sensors installed in the phone. The user is supposed to stand straight while placing both horizontal grasps on the smartphone.
The sensors reportedly work together in measuring the user's entire body. The patent shows a person holding the sensors with tight grips.
The patent allegedly has the ability in "acquiring the object's impedance information on the basis of the intensify of the input current and the intensity of the measured voltage; and acquiring the object's body fat information on the basis of the impedance information."
So far, there is still no certainty on whether Samsung will incorporate this technology in their latest designs. Just like Google and Apple, Samsung submits different patent ideas, but not all of them are introduced to the market.
There is also a big issue in determining the accuracy of the tool. Since this is a health-related feature, Samsung has to make sure, if they are really putting this technology to life, that the tool works because people will rely on it. As CNET pointed out, these sensors work for beginners but for advanced people who are already in great shape, the smartphone heart rate monitors can be "disappointing."
