Instagram to Enable Users to Search on Web
Staff ReporterThe social media app, Instagram, added a feature for users to be able to search on the Web.
This week, it added a feature that will enable users to do the usual things that they do on Instagram but this time, on your desktop. After being a mobile-dependent app, Instagram started to innovate and expand their service to allow users to search online on their computers.
A report from PC showed that Instagram users who are on their PC previously had to use third-party sites such as Websta, OnInstagram, Gramfeed, IconoSquare and FindGram. The web search service is also available for mobile users. The Web expansion feature comes about a month after Instagram updated its iOS and Android apps with a redesigned Explore tabs which show users a list of places and tags that are trending.
An Instagram spokesperson said that while the social media app is designed to be complementary to the mobile apps, he added that web search is important to global conversation, Techcrunch reported.
This is just one of the innovations of the social media app as they have made some moves in the past years, such as in 2012, when Instagram introduced the web profiles but at that time, users can only saw their own feed. The following year, Instagram feeds were added.
As time passed by, Web embed content emerged more vital to driving traffic, making it more apparent for the users to have a positive experience on the site, thus triggering an innovation to the mobile-dependent app was necessary. According to the Instagram, these embeds gave them about 5.3 billion impressions in June 2015.
While other mobile-dependent apps showed little interest in expanding their services on the Web, Instagram innovated and extended their services by adding web search. By improving their desktop presence, the social media app makes viewing and searching through their photo content a cross-platform experience that will make users more comfortable.
The move received positive reactions from Instagram fans. A fan said that the feature should have been added long time ago, but it's still great news for the users. Another fan said it is a great step for the social media app.
Instagram is a free photo sharing app that enables its users to take photos, apply filters and an ability to share their pictures on their social network accounts such as Facebook and Twitter. It was acquired by Facebook in 2012. The social media app has a wide reach with over 200 million users worldwide.
