Total War Warhammer Review: A Strategy Game of Epic Proportions

Jazz Rosin

Turn-based strategy real-time tactics video game Total War: Warhammer is just released today, with much fanfare from both Total War and Warhammer fans. It has an immersive gameplay which stays true to the Total War franchise, combined with the factions of the fantasy game, Warhammer.

The reviews are in, and we will find out why Total War: Warhammer is arguably one of the best strategy games on the PC right now.

Gamespot rated it a 9 out of 10, describing the game not only as 'one of the most faithful adaptations of Warhammer's mythos', but also 'far and away the best Total War has ever been'. Gamespot also pointed out the balance between the different factions, and how each factions have different gameplay options, meaning there is no right way to play. The only complaint was the bad camera setting, which was also an issue with Total War II.

IGN praised the game for its interesting characters, saying that while some factions are more fun than others, none feel 'underdeveloped or unfinished. IGN also said that the campaign pacing needs a bit of tweaking, and said the arrival of Chaos 'always seems to come a bit too quickly' suggesting an extra 20 turns or so for the player to build quality armies. They also find the multiplayer matches 'a lot of fun'.

VG 24/7 described the game as the 'most bizarre, different, and experimental that Total War has been since Napoleon'. They said that gamers who are new to the Total War franchise might not be able to understand what is going on for a while, despite the tutorial mode, but the experience will be enjoyable either way.

Metro gave the game a 9 out of 10, stating that Warhammer's fantasy elements is a welcome addition to Total War's gameplay formula, calling it a 'strategy game that is both deep and tactical but also fun and attractive. However, Metro said that the artificial intelligence (AI) needs a bit more work, and also adds the camera view issue.

What looks to be a beautiful game with fantastic gameplay and immersive elements, Total War: Warhammer is a must-have game for all gamers who are into the strategy genre. With its interesting set of factions and compelling storyline, newbies should give the game a go, despite the overwhelming battle system. Total War: Warhammer is a great strategy game of epic proportions, and so far, based on the glowing reviews, the best title in the Total War series.

Total War: Warhammer is now available on Steam. Check it out here.
