Verizon and Unions Reach Deal To End Strike
The 45 days Verizon strike would be ended soon, since the tech titan and unions reached deal in principle.
U.S. Labor Secretary announced on Friday, Verizon and its two major unions had reached an agreement in principle on a 4-year contract, potentially putting an end to the nearly 40,000 strike.
"The parties are now working to reduce the agreement to writing, after which the proposal will be submitted to CWA (Communications Workers of America) and IBEW (the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ) union members for ratification," said Thomas Perez, the U.S. Secretary of Labor.
Perez also expected that striking workers will be back on the job next week.
Verizon and the unions confirmed the deal, but did not disclose any detail of the agreement.
CWA said in a statement that striking members have achieved their major goals of "improving working families' standard of living, creating good union jobs in our communities and achieving a first contract for wireless retail store workers."
" The agreement in principle at Verizon is a victory for working families across the country and an affirmation of the power of working people," said Chris Shelton, President of CWA. "This proves that when we stand together we can raise up working families, improve our communities and protect the American middle class."
Verizon, however, has not made any comments yet. "Employees with an Emergency Work Assignment should remain on their assignment until further notice," the tech giant said in a short satament referring to the agreement.
NY Times reported that Verizon's new labor contract would be the first since the company took full control of Verizon Wireless and agreed to buy AOL.
The Verizon workers strike may trim U.S. non-farm payroll growth in May by at least 35,000 jobs, a Labor Department report claimed on Friday.
Nearly 40,000 workers have been on strike since April 13, asking for better working conditions. The Strike is the biggest in the U.S. since a 2011 Verizon dispute.
