Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder have always remained fan favorites even after their high-profile breakup, and the actress leaving "The Vampire Diaries." Because of public demand, she will be returning to the series, but not as the character she portrayed before.

Previously this year, The CW announced that in spite of rumors, they will be bringing back "The Vampire Diaries" for yet another season. It is rumored to be the last one because of the poor ratings and the recently confirmed departure from Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham.

Series showrunner Julie Plec recently teased about Dobrev's return to the show. In an interview with TV Line, Plec stated that it would be fun to bring her back in the series.

"In my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she's doing a great job of achieving that," Plec mentioned. "So I'm sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end."

According to Parent Herald, many fans of The Vampire Diaries have expressed their desire to bring Dobrev as Katherine, and not Elena. In an interview with E! News, Dobrev said that she still loves Somerhalder and care about him a lot.

"I love him and the friendship is still strong and I think he's great and I care about him, and that didn't change. Yes, we're professional and that's fine," Dobrev continued. "We were friends long before we dated and we still are now."

Meanwhile, the show is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 21, and Dobrev's return to the show plays a key role in the show's ratings.

However, it is yet to be seen how Dobrev will return, as fans speculate her return as Katherine Pierce and not Elena Gilbert to maintain the distance with Damon Salvatore.
