'Overwatch' Hero Showcase: Hanzo Beginners' Guide

Jazz Rosin

Hanzo is arguably one of the most popular heroes in "Overwatch," and rightly so. The bowman and assassin is one of the trickier heroes to master, but once you do, you'd find yourself sticking to him for a long time.

Character Overview

Name: Hanzo Shimada

Difficulty: Hard. Hanzo's aiming takes a lot of practice to get used to.

Role: Defense

Occupation: Assassin, Mercenary

Base HP: 200

Strong Against: Bastion, Zenyatta, Mercy, Torbjorn, Roadhog

Weak Against: Reinhardt, Winston, Genji, Tracer, Widowmaker

Background Story

Born into a clan of assassins, Hanzo is the successor to the Shimada criminal empire. He has been training for the post since he was young, showing great promise in martial arts, bowmanship and swordplay.

Ten years ago, upon his father's death, Hanzo tried getting his younger brother Genji to come back to the Shimada clan, and was forced to kill him when he refused. Genji survived, with the help of Overwatch, but Hanzo was not aware of this.

He abandoned his place in the Shimada clan to atone for his sins, and is now travelling the world to perfect his skills and restore his honor.

Abilities

Wall Climb - a passive ability that lets Hanzo jump at walls and climb up them

Storm Bow - Hanzo nocks and fires an arrow at his target

Sonic Arrow - Hanzo launches an arrow that contains a sonar tracking device, marking any enemies within its radius

Scatter Arrow - Hanzo shoots an arrow that bounces off walls and can hit multiple targets at once

Dragonstrike - Hanzo's ultimate ability summons a Spirit Dragon which passes through in a straight line, devouring any enemies along the way

Hanzo Tips and Strategies

- Fire Scatter Arrows at the feet of bigger enemies, like Bastion sentries, to do a massive splash damage, as the splinters will bounce up back at them

- Hanzo's close range headshots deal massive damage. Whenever in close combat with another hero, fully draw back and aim for the head

- You can fire two Sonic Arrows at the beginning of the match to provide a wider Infra Sight coverage. About 18 seconds before a match starts, fire a Sonic Arrow straight up in the air, preferrably in front of the opposing team's entrance doors, then fire a second one as soon as the match starts.

- Smaller rooms make Scatter Arrows deadlier, as it gives a smaller area for the fragments to bounce around.

- The Dragonstrike ult is more useful for breaking up defenses and formations. Pair it with Widowmaker's Infra-Sight to see enemies, and fire Hanzo's Dragonstrike ult through walls so enemies have little time to react to it.
