'Resident Evil 7' Demo Redefines Short-Form Horror; 'Beginning Hour' Downloaded Over Two Million Times Worldwide

Capcom has proudly announced that the teaser demo for its upcoming horror game "Resident Evil 7" has broken records, hitting 2 million downloads globally.

Despite the "Beginning Hour" demo only being made available on the Playstation 4 and only to PS Plus subscribers, the most-talked about playable demo has broken the record as the most downloaded single-player PS4 demo in its first week in the US, Gamespot reported.

The demo, which will not be included in the final version of "Resident Evil 7," has been insanely popular since its debut at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The success can be attributed to the charm of "short-form horror," which is comparable to "P.T.", the playable teaser demo for Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro's now cancelled "Silent Hills."

Rock Paper Shotgun has pointed this out, saying that the "Beginning Hour" demo is "beautifully minimalist." As with "P.T.", "Beginning Hour" succeeds at scaring people, and the short game time ensures that these people are continuously hooked.

Players have spent hours trying to uncover all the secrets in the teaser demo, with some even coming up with theories about the game, a few even bordering on bizarre.

Capcom has stepped in to finally confirm that the internet has probably uncovered everything that can be possibly revealed in the game, in a recent email to Resident Evil Ambassador program members.

"We'll be posting an official announcement over the usual channels of course, but we wanted to let our Ambassadors know before anyone else," the email read.

"About a certain 'finger'," the email continued, followed by an image of the infamous dummy finger and a piece of paper that reads, "The path for now is closed but patience..."

The items are placed on top of a September 2016 calendar, which implies that the announcement will be made on that month.

"Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" will be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24, 2017, and will be fully playable on PlayStation VR from start to finish.
