'Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom' Review: Was The Game Underwhelming?
C. de LacyKoei Tecmo's take on "Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom" is a departure from the company's usual one-man army game like the "Dynasty Warrior" series. Did the game capture the anime's dark fantasy feel and brought life to its potential combat mechanics?
Here are some of the review summaries from a number of game review sites to help you decide if the game is worth getting:
The game surprisingly manages to bring represent the original manga and anime's story and the combat was fun. The campaign follows the original storyline from the anime, but later missions tend to be a bit repetitive and suffers from some pacing issues.
The multiplayer aspect fixes some of the tedious tasks of clearing certain missions, especially those that takes way too long to finish. Again, with these mission, things can get pretty repetitive.
The use of grapling hooks and zipwires are well-integrated and doesn't break the rules of physics. Hooks are aimed automatically to the best possible target or building, but hovering above the buildings won't cause players to soar even higher. A case some open-world game like "Amazing Spiderman."
Unlike the usual Dynasty Warriors' brainless hack and slash action, "Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom" will demand timing, skill and mastery.
As with the anime, players need to latch on something or even on a titan's body part and use the zip line to get in contact and damage them. This is very dependent on the direction and the distance.
Failing to do so can get players caught and fortunately, mashing buttons lets the players break free.
Same with the other reviews, Game Watcher also deemed that "Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom" has a very solid core combat mechanic. It does require some practice unlike the usual titles from Koei Tecmo's open-world hack and slash games.
The PC version is also well-optimized with very intuitive UI. There are also a number of graphical setting sliders which can cater to a large number of gamers, making it possible to be played on a wide array of builds from low-end to high-tiered PCs.
The upgrades and leveling system could use a little work however based from the review as it adds very little depth in the game's mechanics.
