'Arrow' Star Stephen Amell Reacts To Filipino Copycat TV Series; TV Exec Insists New Show Is No Ripoff

The popularity of superhero TV show "Arrow" may have given inspiration to a new series in the Philippines, but the show's producers may have gone a bit overboard with the similarities.

Filipino network GMA 7 has recently revealed its new show, titled "Alyas Robin Hood," and its first trailer attracted a lot of flak from both "Arrow" fans and fellow Filipino netizens.

Even Oliver Queen himself, "Arrow" lead actor Stephen Amell, reacted to the striking similarities between both shows, and even shared the trailer on his Facebook page, which he captioned with a flushed emoji.

"I mean... I have no idea what it is and frankly, I don't care - at all - either way," the "Arrow" star responded to a question on Facebook. "But boy oh boy does it look familiar."

The teaser poster also drew a resemblance to "Arrow"'s own poster, which was initially posted by LionhearTV. The poster was eventually dismissed as "fanart."

Despite the painfully obvious resemblance, "Alyas Robin Hood" writer Suzette Doctolero insists that the show is different from CW's TV series.

Calling out fans who have branded her show as an "Arrow" ripoff, Doctolero said, (translation via Rappler) "The story of 'Alias Robin Hood' is different from Arrow. It's very different."

"The lead character of Arrow is a billionaire playboy who became a vigilante. Alyas Robin Hood is a poor man who has experienced social injustice," the writer went on. "Robin Hood was the inspiration for both Arrow and Alyas Robin Hood, so both [characters] have a bow and arrow and a hood, because it's Robin Hood."

The network's vice president for Drama, Redgie Magno, also defended the tv show, Rappler reported, again confirming that the story of "Alias Robin Hood" is different from "Arrow."

"This is the story of a lower-middle class lawyer who will be accused of a crime he did not commit," the GMA exec explained. "In his quest for truth, he will also be able to help those in need."

CW's "Arrow" will be returning with its fifth season on Oct. 5, according to ET Online.
