'Pokémon GO' Eevee Evolution Trick No Longer Working? Espeon, Umbreon To Evolve Via Buddy System in Gen 2 Update?

The augmented-reality mobile game "Pokémon GO" has undergone another change recently, which caused the widely used Eevee evolution trick to stop working.

How Did It Usually Work?

Eevee is arguably one of the most popular Pokémon in "Pokémon GO" due to its multiple evolutions. Normally, all Eevee evolutions are random, but with this simple trick you can choose which Pokémon to evolve your Eevee into: Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon.

The trick, as most of us already know, is to name your Eevee into either Pyro, Sparky, or Rainer before evolving, which will result in a Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon, respectively. This is a nod to The Eevee Brothers in the 40th episode of the original "Pokémon" TV show.

What Has Changed?

The trick is said to be 100% working when it was first discovered. According to Slashgear, however, the Eevee evolution trick has stopped working for a lot of users recently. Now the players can only use the trick three times, one for each evolution type.

What About Generation Two Eevee-lutions Umbreon and Espeon?

We still don't know when the addition of the second generation of Pokémon will happen, but people have now started talking about the Gen 2 Eevee evolutions, Umbreon and Espeon.

In the original "Pokémon" games, Espeon and Umbreon can be obtained depending on two factors: friendship level and time of the day. This same method can be applied to "Pokémon GO." Players may choose to evolve their Eevee in the morning to get Espeon or at night to get Umbreon.

So where will friendship levels come in? This is just a speculation, but the new buddy system can possibly be connected to Eevee's friendship levels. The more you travel with your Eevee, the higher your friendship will be.

Keep in mind that while this is one of the techniques that will make it faithful to the original game's mechanics, Niantic may still do it differently. We will all find out once Gen 2 is up and running.
