"Penny Dreadful" will not be coming back for season 4, according to Showtime CEO David Nevins.

Despite that consistent high ratings earned by the American-British drama series, Showtime boss David Nevins and series creator John Logan confirmed that "Penny Dreadful" was meant to run for 27 episodes and end with the death of Eva Green's Vanessa Ives.

Reports claimed that "Penny Dreadful" season 4 will not push through especially without John Logan on board.

Furthermore, during the Television Critics Association press tour, Nevins revealed that the surprise ending was intended by Logan. He further added that he tried convincing Logan to beyond the intended ending.

"I think [Logan] always envisioned a three-season arc for her and that character," Nevins said. "I was trying to keep open the possibility of going beyond (Season 3)."

"But as we were going into that final season, it became clear that the combination of that character (Vanessa Ives) and John as a writer were the heart of the show, so it seemed like it was going to be foolhardy to continue going," he continued.

However, sources then surfaced that "Penny Dreadful" season 4 could still take off in a different network, with a different writer, or as a spinoff, without Eva Green's character in the show.

Moreover, reports claimed that fans of the series have since created a petition online, asking Netflix to purchase the rights to produce another sequel of the hit supernatural drama series. However, the network has yet to express its desire to continue the series and carry it as one of its shows.

Earlier reports also said that a season 4 or a possible spin-off could perhaps focus on other characters like Perdita Weeks’ Catriona Hartdegen. Furthermore, the new storyline suggested could also delve on the journey of another favorite character, Ferdinand Lyle which is played by Simon Russel Beale. Stay tuned for more updates on "Penny Dreadful."
