Samsung Gear S3: Bigger But More Improve?

Kirsten Kane

The Samsung has a new Gear smartwatch, the Gear S3 which was unveiled just recently. It is the successor to last year's Gear S2.

The Samsung S3 is able to send text messages, track your location, and stream music from Spotify without the help of a phone, depending on the model. It comes in three variants, the Classic and Frontier both packing GPS and the sportier Frontier edition featuring LTE. As reported by Time Magazine, it's the first device of the South Korean company that connects to higher-speed LTE networks.

However, according to Wearable, there's not much difference between the Gear 3 selections aside from the LTE and heaviness. The Classic Gear S3 is more sophisticated than its counterpart with stainless steel body and ridged rotating bezel. Also, it has two rounded buttons on the right side.

On the other hand, the Frontier Gear S3 could be the outdoor sports version with all sensors, hardware buttons, and a rugged exterior. However, the sportier S3 doesn't feel as polished as the Classic.

Samsung's recently released wearable is bigger than the Gear S2. It is also significantly heavier than its predecessor - the S3 Frontier weighs 2.18 ounces, while the S3 Classic weighs in at 2.0 ounces. It is 12.9mm thick compared to the S2's 11.4mm thickness.

The devices are large looking with measurements of 46mm and with a 1.3-inch display compared to the Gear S2's 42mm body and 1.2-inches display.

Like other existing Samsung wearable, both the Frontier and the S3 Classic are IP68 water resistant which means you can submerge it underwater up to 30 minutes at a depth of 5 feet. All variants allow users to purchase items via Samsung Pay.

In terms of battery, Samsung has improved this on the new wearable as the company is targeting between three and four days of battery life for the Gear S3. It only means that the device should be able to survive more than a day as compared to its predecessor.

A new safety feature will also let Gear S3 owners get in touch with emergency services by tapping thrice a button on the watch.

The Samsung Gear S3, although massive, is still visually appealing smartwatch.  It is not a device that will likely to replace phone anytime soon.
