Samsung Galaxy S3 Versus iPhone 4S: Has Apple Finally Met its Match?

Vamien McKalin

Excitement levels are through the roof with the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone that is gearing up to be Samsung's most successful mobile device. The closest competitor to the Galaxy S3 is the Apple iPhone 4S, and today we're going to compare both to see how these devices stack up against each other.

Before we begin the comparison, we have to admit the Galaxy S3 is a beast, the Apple iPhone 4S doesn't stand a chance against a device with such power and style. If you put both phones side by side, it wouldn't take long for you to realize which handset is the lion, and which is the caged little mouse.

Screen Size. 4.8-inch vs 3.5-inch

The first iPhone was released in 2007 with a 3.5-inch display and up to this day the latest iPhone is still rocking the same display, only with better resolution. Compare this with the Samsung Galaxy S3's 4.8-inch screen and you will begin to realize how far behind 8-ball Apple and the iPhone 4S are sitting. However, while we love big displays on our smartphones, 4.8-inch is a bit pushing it, but we would take that any day over a phone with a measly 3.5-inch display.

Design - Pebble vs iPhone iconic design

If anything, this is where the iPhone 4S comes out on top. Samsung is unable to use the previous design because it was too close to the iPhone for comfort, so now the Galaxy S3 fails to have that unique look among the sea of Android smartphones that are flooding the market everyday. We love Galaxy S3's pebble design 'inspired by nature' but we'll lap up iPhone's iconic design any day.

Voice recognition - S-Voice vs Siri

Apple wowed the world in 2011 with Siri. It became the main selling point of the iPhone 4S and was talked about everywhere you look on the Internet. Samsung now has launched the Galaxy S3 with a similar software, called S-Voice, and while it follows the steps of Siri closely, there are some things it does that sets it apart from Apple's finest. In fact, S Voice can do many things that Siri can't, such as shoot a photo for you.

Processor - Quad core vs under-clocked dual core

One of the main reasons to pick up a Galaxy S3 is its 1.4GHz quad core Exynos CPU. This allows for better multitasking and makes Galaxy S3 an overall a speedier phone. The iPhone 4S on the other hand is far behind with its 1GHz dual core A5 CPU that has been under-clocked to 800MHz to preserve battery life. There might not be a huge difference in speed since iOS is well known to be quick on its feet when navigating the menus. However, where applications are concerned, this could be the point the Galaxy S3 leaves the 4S in a pile of dust.

Storage. Internal memory vs microSD

Both the Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 4S have storage options, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. However, the Galaxy S3 does one better with the availability if a microSD card slot for additional memory expansion.

Camera - 8 megapixel vs 8 megapixel

No difference in this department, both devices are rocking an 8 megapixel sharp shooter that takes splendid images. When it comes to videos, both camera are capable of 1080p video capture. Galaxy S3 does, however, feature a Burst Shot mode and offers zero shutter lag.

Connectivity - 4G HSPA vs 4G LTE

Apple released an update this year that brought the 4G icon to the iPhone 4S, but the Galaxy S3 has real 4G in the form of LTE, which will make it significantly faster than anything the 4S can muster.

OS - Android 4.0 vs iOS 5

The Galaxy S3 runs on Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich, while the Apple iPhone 4S has iOS 5 at the helm. Both operating systems are packing similar and unique features, but while Android is more advanced in features and supports Adobe Flash, iOS is easier to use and better designed.

Winner - Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Apple iPhone 4S

Apple might be leading the pack with the iPhone 4S, but Samsung was nipping at its heels with Galaxy S2. The company has come far since the first Galaxy S smartphone in 2010 and with the soon-to-be-released Galaxy S3, Samsung has just beaten Apple.
