Aliens: Colonial Marines Release Date Announced: Delayed Until February 2013

Jonathan Charles

Yesterday Mobile & Apps reported on the interview Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software, conducted with GameSpot. In that interview Pitchford said a release date announcement was "imminent," and it's been revealed: 2013.

As Sega said on its product page for the game just yesterday, the game was scheduled for an Autumn 2012 release date. Sega has pushed the game back the first time to allow Gearbox to make a "great game." Pitchford said in May 21's interview that he felt the team wasn't exploiting the franchise for money. The delay is the second, originally being scheduled for a spring 2012 release date.

No specific reason was given for the delay, though other titles such as BioShock Infinite and the Devil May Cry reboot have been delayed until 2013. It's possible the launch of titles such as Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops will dominate November and the holidays, so developers might feel a game won't perform well around those titles.

"We knew this game would be incredible from the moment Gearbox began developing Aliens: Colonial Marines. Now that the title is in the final stretch of development, we can confidently release the exact date that gamers will get to experience this blockbuster thrill-ride," Gary Knight, senior vice president of marketing for Sega Europe and America, said.

The announcement didn't cover the Wii U version, while confirming the game releases for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 along with the PC. In the GameSpot interview, Pitchford talked specifically about the Wii U's features such as a movement-sensitive motion tracker. He also said the Wii U was definitely a next-gen console, and by extension that console's version is the best-looking. However, he assured fans the experiences will be similar across all platforms.

"Sega has a proven track record with the Aliens franchise. Aliens vs Predator released by Sega in 2009 became one of their top-selling titles. We look forward to working with them and bringing an exciting new way for fans to immerse themselves in the Aliens world," Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President for New Media for Fox Consumer Products, added.
