iPhone 7 Jet Black vs Samsung Galaxy S7 Black Pearl Review: Which Glossy Black Option Is Better?

Here's a one-on-one showdown between Apple's latest-generation smartphone, the iPhone 7, and Samsung's latest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S7 - both in their new glossy black offerings.

The iPhone 7 was released in September and featured two black colors: Matte Black, and the new Jet Black option. The color is only available on the iPhone's 128GB and 256GB models, making it a more premium color option.

The Jet Black color option had a positive response because of its elegant, stylish aesthetics; however, some users find it rather disappointing for one reason: the company warned Jet Black owners that the device is more prone to scratching and scuffing than the Matte Black color option.

The device's glossy black finish is also prone to fingerprint marks (in addition to the scratches) but only seems to be visible only on direct light. Many people even mentioned that the Jet Black iPhone needs a case, but a few disagree because the unique color would essentially go to waste.

Meanwhile, Samsung unveiled a new color option for the Samsung Galaxy Edge - the Black Pearl. The new color option was made available on December 9 on selected markets, but Samsung didn't say which markets would it be released. Reports say it does look very similar to the iPhone's Jet Black shade, with its glossy finish.

Furthermore, the Black Pearl Samsung Galaxy S7 is exclusive to the 128GB configuration of Samsung's flagship phone, making it a more premium color option too, just like on the iPhone's.

Initial response to the S7's new color scheme is also positive, similar to the iPhone 7. So far, there are no reports of scratches present in the iPhone's Jet Black option.

This marks Samsung's seventh color option for the Galaxy S7, with the Black Onyx, Gold Platinum, White Pearl, Silver Titanium, Pink Gold and Blue Coral colors made available earlier this year. On the other hand, the iPhone is available in 5 colors: Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Matte Black and Jet Black.

Color designs aside, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is regarded to be one of the most powerful smartphones on paper with its Exynos 8890 Ultra processor chip, and a superior screen. However, Apple's tradition of carefully optimizing the iOS to the their hardware easily made up for the iPhone's less powerful hardware specs.

Both iPhone 7 Jet Black and Samsung Galaxy S7 Black Pearl are available for an impressively competitive price of $750 for the 128GB models. A 256GB option for the iPhone 7 is also available, for $849.
