The anime movie "Your Name." has made an interesting feat internationally and is, at present, dubbed as second-highest grossing movie in japan and the 20th highest-grossing movie worldwide this year. Here is an account on how this anime movie became Japan's most popular movie of 2016.

The anime movie "Your Name." is now a worldwide phenomenon raking approximately USD$ 170 million in Japan and approximately USD$40 million in China on the first three days of its release, according to Anime News Network. In the months after it premiered, the zealous following that the film has gathered has only grown stronger.

The anime movie "Your Name." is a story of two high school students who have never met, yet were united through their dreams. The film directed by Makoto Shinkai won the Best Animated Feature Film award at Spain's 49th annual Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain. An episode of one of the longest-running current affairs program, Close-up Gendai on NHK tried to come up with explanations behind the anime movie's unprecedented success.

According to Close-up Gendai's research, the recognitions of videos relating to the film on social media were one of the main causes. There are amateur covers of Radwimps' song Zen Zen Zense or Past Past Past Life, the anime movie "Your Name.'s" theme song, which helped the film  gain traction in the public mind. Consequently, the release of the song prior to the film's release, as well as fans creating and sharing their personal song covers, played a big part on the film's promotional campaign. The Radwimps song is in many ways the aural backbone of the film, remarking favorably on the masterfully fashioned work of animation.

Film writer and director Makoto Shinkai admits in a recent interview with Netallica that he picked some plotting hints from Disney's "Frozen," with regard to the cadence of the story and where to properly insert gags. Moreover, he admitted that, originally, the movie's target market was young people in the teens and twenties age cluster. Nevertheless, half of the viewership turned out to be people in their 30's and older.

The anime movie "Your Name." craftily made an association with old memories, such as a close friend or a lost love in younger years. Furthermore, aside from word-of-mouth that drives viewers to the theater, the genuine, emotional connection with the movie is what pulls them back and influences them to tell their friends and family, creating interest and multiplying the effect.
