‘Overwatch,’ ‘Battlefield 1,’ ‘Titanfall 2’ Among Reasons Why 2016 Was The Best Year For FPS
Arianne GiftEver since "Wolfenstein 3D" made its way into the gaming scene in 1992, first-person shooters have become a staple. From then on, the genre has established a solid ground and bore some of the most significant and best-selling games, such as "Halo" and "Half-Life." Further cementing the importance of FPS games is Sony and Microsoft's initiative in marketing their systems using the appeal of exclusive shooter games, which brings us to the fact that 2016 has enjoyed the best shooter games in years.
2016 brought on a new batch of gamers into the FPS hype, largely due to the allure of "Overwatch," a game whose variety of characters offered an enjoyable time even for those not really keen on video games. While the game's colorful characters are obviously what make it attractive, "Overwatch's" strongest point is eliminating the gore element of most first-person shooters.
Of course, games like "DOOM" will always have its own spotlight for its gritty feel, but not everyone actually likes their games nasty. "Overwatch" has offered an alternative without the sacrificing the FPS experience.
Traditional shooters like "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," "Titanfall 2" and "Battlefield 1" also became the highlight of 2016, exceeding everybody's expectations. "Battlefield 1" made quite a positive leap from its previous title, but it was "Titanfall 2" that's made the most shocking improvement. Respawn Entertainment definitely stepped up and offered the coolest missions by far in FPS and according to The Verge, "Infinite Warfare" is "Call of Duty's" most ambition campaign in years.
PlayStation Lifestyle reported that 2016 was also a good year for indie games. "SUPERHOT" for one, made waves by making it so that action only happened whenever the player moved. AAA titles also offered better gunplay, although it's safe to say that "Titanfall 2" is a better playing shooter. The freeing sense of movement and precision shooting make it the best multiplayer.
2016 was indeed exciting for first-person shooters, but the best is still come. It remains to be seen if 2017 will top what last year had to offer, although we're yet to find that out with "Farpoint," "Prey" and "Star Wars Battlefront 2." Nevertheless, let's claim that the new year will bring in more thrills and less disappointments.
