Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Source Code Released, Custom ROMs coming soon

Johnny Wills

After showing off Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the successor to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), Google has releasing the source code of the new OS into Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for mass downloads. Smartphone manufacturers will not be releasing Jelly Bean updates anytime soon. But, we can expect Custom ROM developers like CyanogenMod to release Android 4.1 ROMs in near future.

Google's Jean-Baptiste Queru announced on the Android Building group that the company has released Android 4.1 source code in Android Open Source Project (AOSP) tree.

The company also announced Android 4.1 binaries for Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM (maguro), Verizon Galaxy Nexus (toro), and Google Nexus 7 tablet (grouper). Binaries for the Nexus S and Motorola Xoom will be release shortly. The announcement made sure that full ROMs for these devices are officially coming soon. However, the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for other devices is months away.

Android device manufactures like Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony and LG are yet to make a statement about when the new operating system version will arrive on respective smartphones and tablets. LG acknowledged that it too busy in implementing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the company has no time to put emphasis on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The scenario is apparently same across other manufacturers too. Motorola has just updated the Droid Razr and Razr Maxx with Android 4.0, while Samsung started rolling Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note on Tuesday. Other the other hand, Sony is yet to put up many of its devices on the Ice Cream Sandwich update list.

Evidently, Android 4.0 ICS runs on about 10 percent of Android device only, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread dominating the market. In such a time, Android device manufacturers are not rolling Android 4.1 updates anytime soon. Looking at the current update behaviors, we doubt whether any of the devices left out of Google's Jelly Bean update list will receive Android 4.1 in 2012.

However, it does not stop custom ROM developer from working on the Jelly Bean. Folks at CyanogenMod have already started their job. It is believed that CM10 Nightly builds will appear on CyanogenMod Web site in couple of months. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S2 have already received the first Android 4.1 custom ROM.
