The Internet Movie Database is probably one of the most well known sources for film information, whether searching for information on an actor's career or a movie's release date. The UK-based company has announced that its mobile apps on iOS and Android have collectively been downloaded 40 million times.

The Next Web reported that's an almost 50-50 split between iOS and Android - so 20 million downloads each - while usage of the apps and mobile Web site has surpassed 150 million users each month.

As a result IMDb has announced new updates to the apps: users can now sign into Facebook and Twitter to share movies being watched, post on forums via the apps and discover various information about a movie. That includes where a movie was filmed, the music on the soundtrack and a More Like This features to find related movies.

"Today's announcement reflects growing customer demand for discovery, personalization and social functionality on their favorite mobile apps. Given that IMDb.com's message boards generate 2.5 billion page views annually, it's no surprise that mobile-optimized message boards were our number one customer request. Beginning today, more than 40 million movie, TV show and celebrity fans - and counting - will enjoy mobile message boards, check-ins, similarities, and more when using IMDb's apps for iPhone, iPad and Android devices," CEO Col Needham said on the announcement.

The changes are due to consumer demand, apparently, according to PCMag. "We added features to increase engagement and make the mobile app more attractive," IMDb's head of mobile - Kintan Brahmbhatt - said. Barhmbhatt also said the 40 million download mark is a "massive achievement" for the service.

Android users can also sign in with an Amazon account; Amazon acquired the company in 1998.

IMDb for iOS and Android is available now. If movie or TV buffs are looking for the mobile app to confirm information or just look up a movie about to be watched, then this is the ideal app. The apps currently average a five-out-of-five star rating on iOS and four and a half on Google Play.
