Dark Knight Rises: Top Gadgets and Characters to Watch Out For

Anu Passary

The caped crusader is on the prowl for a final time as Christopher Nolan's concluding film in the Batman trilogy - The Dark Knight Rises - gets ready to hit the theaters. As the plot thickens, The Dark Knight Rises looks to pack a mean punch with several new gadgets and characters to watch out for.

Based on the DC Comics immensely popular character Batman, The Dark Knight Rises is a follow-up to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, which were released in 2005 and 2008, respectively. Nolan's third and final instalment of the film premiered in New York City on July 16 and is slated to release on July 19 in Australia and New Zealand. The movie will be released in both North America and the UK on July 20.

The final movie in the Batman trilogy has been shot in several exotic locales like Jodhpur, Nottingham, Los Angeles, Glasgow, Nottingham, New York, and London amongst others. Moreover, IMAX cameras, which boast a superb picture quality, have been used for filming a large chunk of the The Dark Knight Rises.

After an eight-year long sabbatical from his precious bat toys, Bruce Wayne portrayed by Christian Bale, returns to the cape and cowl, ready to take on the phantoms that haunt and Gotham city evils. The thieving Catwoman aka Selina Kyle is played by Anne Hathaway, who is ready to me-wow audiences after Michelle Pfieffer and Halle Berry donned the leather catsuit in the earlier films. The new villain for the third Bat flick instalment is aptly called Bane. In the early 90's comic strip he was given the moniker of "the Man who broke the Bat". The muzzled and massive villain's role is depicted by English actor Tom Hardy best known for his role in Star Trek: Nemesis and the TV film Stuar:A Life Backwards, for which he received a BAFTA best actor nomination

The iconic English actor Michael Cane returns as Alfred, Bruce Wayne's man Friday. Whether Bruce will listen to his valet/butler/father figure's paternal advice in the last movie in the Batman trilogy is anybody's guess. Gary Oldman as commissioner Jim Gordon is back as is Morgan Freeman who plays Lucius Fox, the brilliant and eccentric CEO of Wayne Enterprises. In other roles and plot twists, John Blake - an earnest and idealistic cop is essayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The character's presence is shrouded in mystery, will he impact Batman's life and if so, how?

The Dark Knight Rises also sees a new love interest for our friendly neighbourhood superhero in Miranda Tate (Marion Cottilard) and as the plot gets more twisted we also see the return of a Batman Begins movie character - Ra's Al Ghu, the League of Shadows leader, who wanted to destroy Gotham City.

Batman and gadgets go hand-in-hand, a symbiotic relationship. So what's in store for the fans in the third instalment?

Bruce Wayne's go-to-gadget-guy Lucious Fox (played by Morgan Freeman) does not disappoint. To aide Batman in his escapades as he gets ready to fend off Gotham City miscreants are his high-end night vision goggles, the ever-handy Utility Belt, and a Nomex survival suit amongst others. The suit, which is his protective armor, is being touted as the most complete ever and features a Kevlar bi-weave and graphite cowl.

Batman can fly high with his trusty Fibre Cape, which electrically charge the batwings and help in small flights. Since the caped crusader does not use firearms (as they were the cause of his parents' death), the Batarang - a bat-shaped boomerang - is his main armament with which he snatches the weapons from his enemies' hands.  Sometimes, he uses the smoke pellets to blind his enemies temporarily. The Grapple Gun, a spear-tipped, spring-loaded projectile used as a hook trailer, helps Batman scale heights.

Then there's the Batmobile - the dream machine for any villain-chasing superhero. Batman's bulky car can even scale vertical heights and makes the fancy Bond cars look like cheap toys! What's more the Batmobile, this time round, is supposedly a car-plane hybrid and equips rocket launchers and 50-caliber machine guns! Coupled with the Batmobile is Batman's super bike - the Batpod, which if released images of the movie are anything to go by, Catwoman Anne Hathway got to ride in The Dark Knight Rises.

However, the icing on the cake is undoubtedly the all-important Utility Belt. The strap and buckle belt are indispensable to our superhero and hold a mini-cam, a two-way radio, 10 cylindrical cartridges, and a compartment for all the Batarangs. The best bit about the belt though is a ring made of Kryptonite. Why? Well, just in case Superman turns evil!

With danger lurking everywhere can the caped crusader be the savior once again? The final Batman movie in the trilogy, The Dark Knight Returns, holds the promise of a thrilling end.
