According to a new report, Samsung's flagship phones are scheduled to get the much-anticipated Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade, Google's new mobile platform. Jelly Bean is the latest version of the popular Android mobile operating system and comes with a slew of exciting new features such as Google Now, smoother user interface, improved search with voice, new camera features, bug fixes, software enhancements, and much more.
Citing an unnamed source, Sam Mobile reported that Samsung's 2011 Galaxy S2, the recently launched Galaxy S3, as well as the first Galaxy Note are reportedly scheduled to upgrade from Android Ice Cream Sandwich to the hot new version, Jelly Bean. The Samsung Kies, OTA, or over the air update is reportedly due to arrive by August or September.
"There are no words yet about any other devices," Sam Mobile reported. "But the insider told us that Samsung will update the HIGH-END devices more and more. That's why the chances for the Galaxy Note will be bigger than ever."
Considering that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is expected to sell 15 million units by the end of this year, an upgrade to the latest version of Android makes sense. If it sells 15 million units, it means 15 million people will demand the new Google platform for their hot Android device. As for the other phones, upgrading older devices to Jelly Bean would allow Samsung to bolster its brand and reputation as many tech sites continue to criticize the company's track record with Android updates.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in two versions: the U.S. version is powered by a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, while the global version sports an Exynos quad-core CPU. Considering carrier control over updates, the global version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 will likely get the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update before the U.S. version. The Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note are both powered by the older Exynos processor.
The upgrade to Jelly Bean has not been confirmed, but an official told Forbes that an update was in progress for the Galaxy S3 flagship smartphone. The rumored update could be related to the expected launch of Apple's next-generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5. Apple has not confirmed the iPhone 5 launch either, but rumors indicate the new smartphone will arrive by the end of October.
