Choosing between Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra has become one of those things in which a buyer may view the more expensive one as something with extra features he/she won't need. So what usually happens is that one ends up with the regular, or perhaps more appropriately, the cheaper version.

However, it is undeniable that the Ultra version packs quite a punch when it comes to capabilities. It requires a heftier sum and is a media streamer people will love. So why should one choose the more expensive Chromecast? Read on to help you decide.

Original Chromecast

...or the regular Chromecast is the basic HDMI many want to buy instinctively. It streams well at 1080p and is so tiny it can be powered by your TV, if it has USB port. The first introduced Chromecast is powered with a Micro-USB cable connected to a 5V/1A power source and supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz and 5GHz.

A tip by Android Central says that instead of using Wi-Fi, one can use an Ethernet adapter made for the Chromecast. It works basically the same -- you cast from your Chrome browser or your smartphone and stream on your TV by plugging in a 10/100 Ethernet cable. The regular Chromecast costs $35.

Chromecast Ultra

In the simplest sense, the Chromecast Ultra is the upgraded version of its predecessor. It costs double the price at $70, but it can stream 4K Ultra HD and HDR content. Its internal hardware lets users stream videos without the hassle of skipping or buffering, of course granted, you're network is stable and fast.

The Ultra connects to 802.11ac 2.4GHz and 5GHZ Wi-Fi with a 1x2 Single Input Multi Output (SIMO). It has a ready Ethernet port should you opt out of Wi-Fi and, according to Google, is "the fastest Chromecast yet," with 1.8 faster streams than its regular counterpart.

Whichever of the two you choose should provide you with amazing shows and movies from multiple apps, without having to decide any network setting or some cryptic software. For those with a 4K TV or any device capable of HDR content, it's smart to invest on a Chromecast Ultra.
