"Criminal Minds" Season 12 had a controversial return in 2016 because of the departure of an original character Aaron Hotchner portrayed by Thomas Gibson. The team behind the show, including the producers, have been mum about what transpired as they prepare for Gibson's exit. Fortunately, "Criminal Minds" Showrunner Erica Messer finally broke her silence on the matter and what she had to say is detailed below.

In an interview with TV Guide, Messer clarified that writing Gibson's character out of the storyline did not come easy. She loves Hotch in the show and preferred to see his story wrap up in a way he deserves. And for the showrunner, leaving his job for his son is the best way to see him go.

As Messer explained, it was a fitting story to write off the character since Hotch has been absent for a couple of episodes before his final exit. She said that the former BAU chief had to file a temporary leave from work because he didn't want the rest of his workmates to be dragged into Mr. Scratch' dark plans against him. And so, Hotch left his team and entered the Witness Protection program with his son.

Meanwhile, in another interview with TV Line, Messer talked about actor Damon Gupton as Agent Stephen Walker. He is the latest addition to the "Criminal Minds" cast. The showrunner revealed that it is the network, which wanted to put Gupton in the show.

Because of this, Messer had to think of the best role for the actor and that is to be an expert in espionage. His skill is said to be a great addition to the team. It will be useful in their search for Mr. Scratch, reportedly.

If the BAU team finally captures Mr. Scratch, is there hope for Hotch to return? "Criminal Minds" Season 12 is now on its 11th episode. The episode entitled "Surface Tension" will air on Feb. 1.
