Spike TV's 'The Mist' Is A 'Reimagination' Of The Stephen King Novella

Famed author Stephen King is no stranger to film and TV show adaptations of his work. According to reports circulating online, his novella "The Mist" will now be reimagined as a TV series on Spike.

Stephen King's novella "The Mist" was originally published as a story in the 1980 "Dark Forces" anthology. The story was then republished, and the "slightly edited version" was included in the King short story collection called "Skeleton Crew" in 1985.

In 2007, a film of the same name was released. While the film was faithful to most of the novella, the ending of "The Mist" was radically different from the written work, which was left ambiguous by the author. The 2007 film adaptation of the novella starred Thomas Jane ("Boogie Nights," "The Veil"), Marcia Gay Harden ("Used People," "Fight Club"), and Laurie Holden ("Silent Hill," "The Walking Dead").

According to TV Guide, when the TV adaptation of "The Mist" was announced, fans were curious to find out "how the short story would be adapted into a serialized format." At the Television Critics Association's winter previews, the show's executive producer teased fans about how they will handle the transition to the small screen.

Christian Torpe, Spike's executive producer, shared, "Let's call it a reimagination." He added, "It's like a weird, twisted cousin to the original source material. Fans of the movie and of the book and of Mr. King's work will certainly see elements from it. ... We also, in order to develop it for TV and turn it into an ongoing series, took our own little detours here and there."

Meanwhile, Den of Geek has revealed the upcoming TV adaptation's plot. "The Mist" will focus on "a small New England town" whose residents suddenly find themselves having to deal with a strange fog. The show will feature "multiple scattered groups" who must survive the "foreboding mist" that will put "their humanity to the test."

"The Mist's" cast includes Alyssa Sutherland as Eve Cunningham, and Gus Birney as Alex, Eve's daughter. Dan Butler will portray Father Romanov, and Luke Cosgrove will play Jay Heisel. Danica Curcic will portray Mia Lambert, and Okezie Morro will play Jonah Dixon. Spike's "The Mist" is slated for a late 2017 release.
