Elena Gilbert, Nina Dobrev's character in "The Vampire Diaries" was last seen in season 6 of the show. The last time fans saw Elena Gilbert was when she fell into a deep sleep only to be awakened upon the death of Bonnie, played by Kat Graham in the series.

Kevin Williamson, creator of "The Vampire Diaries", said that having Nina in the folds will guarantee that the show's finale will be epic. The Show's Executive Producer, Julie Plec, also expressed her happiness with Nina's return and said that it will bring the show to an end that they intended to make.

After the confirmation that Nina Dobrev will be coming back for "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 a lot of speculations have surfaced as to how the writers of the show will play out the show's ending. It is known that Elena will only wake up from the deep sleep casted by the evil witch Kai if Bonnie dies.

Recent "The Vampire Diaries" episodes have hinted that Bonnie is leaning towards choosing to become a vampire despite Kai's warning that doing so may not wake up Elena. Also, Elena's doppelganger, Katerina Petrova, is also rumored to be making a comeback. Katerina was last seen being dragged into hell.

The series finale of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will air on March 10. The episode will be co-written by Plec and Williamson.
