GoPro Karma Drone Recall Updates: Relaunch Plan May Be Too Late With DJI Mavic Pro Now Leading The Market

GoPro's Karma drone is back on sale after it was recalled in November 2016. In the almost three months that it was not around, DJI Mavic Pro might have already occupied the valuable ground that the GoPro's Karma drone had lost.

GoPro is now accepting orders after voluntarily recalling all of its newly launched GoPro Karma drones. Shortly after it was launched, customers started complaining about the drone because of a problem that led some to suddenly losing power while in flight.

GoPro said in a press release that the issue is about a defective latch mechanism that, at times, caused the onboard battery to cut off during flight. The brand claims that it has come up with a new battery latch design that solves the old problem.

Unfortunately, some analysts said that GoPro Karma drone may have wasted its chance to claim a substantial market share. Apart from that, the GoPro Karma drone could have been a serious challenger to China's DJI, the industry leader.

According to Fast Company, GoPro Karma drone's initial release was delayed for about a year. In addition, the recall took place not long after DJI launched its Mavic Pro, which was seen as a direct GoPro Karma competitor, offering more features.

Aside from the initial launch delays, the GoPro Karma faces two major obstacles to expansive customer acceptance. One is when it lost valuable ground over the last two months to the Mavic Pro. Although DJI had its own problems accomplishing customers' orders for the Mavic Pro, the drone, similarly priced to the GoPro Karma, had been a great success.

Another obstacle is that the GoPro Karma lags behind both the DJI Mavic Pro and other DJI drones when it comes to features. The DJI Mavic is smaller than the Karma and has a rich matching set of obstacle avoidance and follow-me features that the Karma cannot compete.

Drone analyst Colin Snow said that GoPro Karma is a 2015 drone in 2017.He added that it is a too big foldable drone, overpriced and does not have as many features. Moreover, he said that DJI Mavic, in terms of features, blows everybody out of the water.
