iPads will now function as better remote controls for Apple TV. The new version 3.4 of the Showyou iPad app includes Retina Display support released on Aug. 16. Users can now play a movie using their iPad as a remote while also checking social media sites, weather updates, or e-mail.

Showyou is a social video sharing tool that has the distinction of being named as one of Apple's top social-networking iPad apps for 2011. The video sharing tool is an offering from San Francisco-based company Remixation and was launched in April 2011. Showyou currently boasts of an inventory that comprises over 60 million uploaded videos onto its network. Nearly 10 million videos are uploaded each day.
Drawing from Showyou's iPhone app, the current rollout incorporates several social features like "Send to Friend" and "Thanks", Retina Display support, and dual-screen multitasking into the iPad app .
"The thing we're probably most excited about is a subtle, and simple, change we've made - enabling you to multi-task when you beam a video to your Apple TV via Airplay with Showyou. What's that mean? That you can Tweet and Instagram and check your email while you play a video from Showyou on your TV," stated Showyou in a Wordpress post.
The dual-screen multitasking also enables users that have Apple TV to use Showyou as a remote control to access a plethora of online videos.
"With Showyou on your iPad (or iPhone or iPod Touch), tens of millions of great, hand-picked videos are a tap or two away, ready to be beamed to your TV," claims Showyou.
However, detractors opine that Apple's devices have had the multitasking functionality since 2011, which was incorporated into its streaming service with iOS 5.
According to CNET, "Showyou CEO Mark Hall admits that this may seem like a tiny change. But he said the functionality makes a big difference for the viewing experience, and that's what Showyou is trying to improve."
Hall also hinted that several improvements are on their way by fall. The improvements are aimed at expanding Showyou's content and establishing its presence as a distribution platform. "Thinking long term -- more programming that's longer format, more premium programming," stated Hall.
