Apple has created a testing procedure for complying the rules of California Department of Motor Vehicles about the autonomous testing on state roads. This would act as failsafe controls during independent vehicle testing.

According to Business Insider, a document was acquired through a public records request show regarding the details of the development platform that Apple used in testing. Included in the details are the sensor hardware as well as the software for monitoring the surroundings. These are called Apple Automated System. According to the forms filed out by Apple officials, this system could control the steering, acceleration, deceleration and the dynamic driving task portions. In addition, it is said that the steering equipment was culled from the Logitech wheel and pedals. This is to provide a way in taking over the vehicle's control.

Tech Crunch reported that Apple intends seven different tests for driver proficiency and their actual ability to take action, which is part of the requirement asked by the law of California, stating that prior the deployment of test vehicles and safety driver must be tested accurately. There are two practice runs and three trials for each safety driver before it is considered passed. Drivers can disengage the electronic driving mode by pressing the brake or grabbing the steering wheel, however, they can accelerate without overriding the drive by wire mode.

According to a market analyst, this could cost up to tens of billions of dollars. With this, Apple can ditch other companies such as Google, Uber, and Tesla. Apple has already been granted by California DMV a license to conduct autonomous testing. Included in the permit three 2015 Lexus RX450h SUVs. This is the car that used by Google in their self-driving tests, says BGR.

The names of the drivers of Apple in the application are mostly with Ph.D.s, with specializations in learning about machines. Some of them have already worked with other companies like Tesla and Bosch. These details were seen on their LinkedIn profiles. With these few details, Apple's market strategy about the testing and development system are not yet known and the company is not discussing anything regarding its business plan
