Google Maps for iPhone debuted recently on Apple Apps store and within 48 hours the app was downloaded over 10 million times.
Apple's own mapping apps which made its appearance in the latest iOS 6 released first in the iPhone 5 in September had to face high criticism. Since the launch of iOS 6, users have reported problems with the new maps app, which lacks detailing and omits public transit directions.
Moreover, Apple's highly-touted 3D flyover feature has also received criticism as the feature displayed comically distorted images that look liked major landmarks, and some structures even appeared to have been destroyed.
Google Maps have been a standard feature on the iPhone since it debuted in 2007. However, Apple decided to discontinue Google Maps and introduce its own mapping service in the iOS 6. With the failure of Apple's own mapping system Google brought its Google Maps app for iPhones on Dec. 13.
"We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years," said Jeff Huber, a Google senior vice president, on Google+.
Google Maps app has a lot to offer to iOS 6 iPhone users.
"Navigate your world with Google Maps, now available for iPhone. Get comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps with built-in Google local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation, public transit directions, Street View and more. Use Google Maps to discover great places to eat, drink, shop and play, with ratings and reviews from people you trust. Sign in to save your favorite places and quickly access all your past searches and directions from your computer, right on your phone," notes the app description.
The iPhone version of Google Maps has been launched; however, the iPad version of Google Maps is still to be released. Users will hope that Google will bring the iPad version soon. Reports suggest that Apple has started fixing its mapping app. We will have to wait and see how quickly Apple can fix its own mapping app.
Users can download the app for free from Apple's App store.
