"Age of Empires II" will become available on Steam starting on April 9 but you can pre-order it now for a 10 percent discount.
The Age of Empires series saw whopping success, though its glory days were likely sometime around 1999. That's the year when Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings went blazing into killing fields, getting an increasing number of players addicted to the game.
Times change, however, and current monitors are all but spaceships compared to the old ones. Today's monitors are thin and wide, sporting a great appetite for awesome resolutions.
Consequently, Microsoft finally decided it was time for a revamp of Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and plans to re-release the title on Steam in a little under one month. Graphics get a modern makeover for the re-launch, but that's not the only thing changing. The new, revamped version comes from Defense Grid developer Hidden Path, and packs plenty of bells and whistles to catch one's eye.
"In Age of Empires II: HD Edition, fans of the original game and new players alike will fall in love with the classic Age of Empires II experience," touts Steam. "Explore all the original single player campaigns from both Age of Kings and The Conquerors expansions, choose from 18 civilizations spanning over a thousand years of history, and head online to challenge other Steam players in your quest for world domination throughout the ages."
The revamped Age of Empires II comes with multi-monitor support for those who want to bleed on multiple monitors, and it also includes full Steam Workshop support. The title will become available on April 9 with a decent price tag of $20, but those who pre-purchase the title now from Steam can benefit from a 10 percent discount and get the game on April 5.
The re-released game will most likely not create the same frenzy it did back in the day, but it will take AOE II fans on a nice trip down memory lane, pulling more than a decade's worth of user-created content under one big umbrella. Overall, what the remastered Age of Empires II aims to do is allow players to relive the glory days with today's technology.
