A year from now, Microsoft will cease all support for Windows XP, leaving everyone who wants to stick it out with the operating system to fend for themselves, or move up the ladder to something new and modern.

Microsoft issued the warning in a blog post, urging businesses to make the switch before it is too late.

Microsoft said Monday, "After April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates."

Windows XP is no longer getting most updates for regular consumers; this support ended in May of 2009. However, security updates are still coming in, but that is expected to end April 8, 2014. By that time, you'll be on your own, and no matter how much antivirus software you use, your Windows XP will not be immune to recent threats.

Remember, if something bad should ever happen to your beloved PC running Windows XP, there won't be a sign of support from Microsoft, because the warning has already been issued.

It is understandable that Windows XP is a great operating system, one that brought new features and innovation still used to this day, but it is old and prone to modern infections. Windows XP users should do whatever it takes to move on from this dinosaur before they are bitten in ways that cannot be treated.

So far, Windows XP is second to Windows 7 when it comes to market share, with its 38.73 percent of the market. Windows 7 has 44.7 percent, Windows 8 and Windows Vista both combined make 8 percent, which goes to show the slow adoption rate of Windows 8.

If Windows XP users do not have the hardware to upgrade to a new Windows-based operating system, then give Ubuntu shot. Not as good as Windows, but it's alright.
