Former Nokia Team Jolla, Announces First Sailfish Powered Smartphone For Asia

Vamien McKalin

Nokia's former MeeGo team is gearing up to take the smartphone world by storm with a new operating system called Sailfish OS. This new OS is a direct descendant from MeeGo, and has been in development for quite some. Recently, the team behind Jolla launched the first ever device to run the new operating system, with the aim of proving Nokia wrong in its decision to ditch MeeGo in favor of Microsoft's own Windows Phone mobile operating system.

Folks who are interested in the first Jolla smartphone should take note that the new device will not launch outside of Asia anytime soon, as markets like the U.S. and Europe are too competitive. Jolla's best bet at any type of success is to launch Sailfish in markets where growth can be achieved, which in turn would give the operating system more power to dance with the big boys in other nations.

As of now, Google Android and Apple iOS controls 92 percent of the smartphone market combined, Windows Phone and BlackBerry on the other hand, only controls 3 percent each. Furthermore, those operating systems are not the only ones Jolla would have to contend with it. In one corner, we have the Ubuntu operating system for mobile devices, and in the other corner, Mozilla's own Firefox OS.

Jolla chairman Antti Saarnio said to Reuters that with the company's operating system, users will have the ability to download Android apps, probably similar to what BlackBerry 10 users can do. The openness of the platform allows for this to happen, which could be one of the main selling points of a Jolla smartphone going forward.

"In the long run, if someone brings fresh and new ideas, eventually, the market changes," Saarnio said.

The new device has 4G, a 4.5-inch display and 8-megapixel camera. The price is set at approximately $510, so it won't be cheap, but still cheaper than the latest high-end smartphones from any camp.

The very first Sailfish device is set to go on sale come the fourth quarter of 2013.
