Top iOS apps & games are now free to celebrate Apple App Store’s 5th birthday

Apple's App Store is turning five and to celebrate the big event, the Cupertino tech giant is giving away top apps and games, completely free of charge.

The company kicked off its great promo very quietly, without an official press release or announcement. This means that no conclusive list is currently available to signal exactly which apps are now free, but one thing's for sure: iOS users can make some great savings right now.

Price cuts range from $0.99 to $19.99 and games that are now available for free include Badland, Infinity Blade II, Tiny Wings, Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP and more. Apps such as Day One, Barefoot World Atlas, Over, and Traktor DJ for iPad (which normally costs $19.99) are now free of charge as well.

In other words, even if you don't really need some of these apps and games right now, it might be a good idea to grab them anyway while they're free. Without any official list of all things on offer it's rather tough to say exactly which apps are now free, but surely plenty more are part of this promotion. The lack of an official statement also makes it difficult to determine for how long this promotion will last. So far, the only relevant hint seems to be Epic Games' mention that Infinity Blade II will be "free for a limited time."

None of these apps and games has ever been available for free on the App Store. On the contrary, some of them were actually quite costly and not everyone can afford to shell out $20 for an app. The move to make them free, however, will surely benefit Apple as well. With top apps now available for free, download numbers will most likely explode, which means that in-app purchases will be more likely for such apps.

The promotion is likely aiming to celebrate Apple App Store's fifth anniversary, which will take place on Wednesday, July 10. The company is expected to make an official announcement regarding the promotion ahead of the actual anniversary date. Until then, hunting for freebies may bring plenty of surprises. Let us know if you find any other previously paid apps that are now free and not mentioned in this article. Happy hunting!
