Google’s second-generation Nexus 7 launch: is it here yet?

Alexandra Burlacu

Google launched its first Nexus 7 last July and with Android 4.3 imminent, a July 2013 launch date for the second-generation Nexus 7 seems plausible.

The original ASUS-made Google Nexus 7 hit the Play Store in July 2012, rocking a brand new Android Jelly Bean software version. One year later, Android 4.3 is reportedly nearing its final build, giving Jelly Bean another spin before Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie makes its debut later this year.

All things considered, there's a very good chance that a new  magic combo - the second-generation Nexus 7 with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean - will repeat the scheme Google pulled last year when it launched its first 7-inch tablet and new OS.

Various reports made rounds claiming that Motorola plans to share something big on July 11. Since Motorola is now a Google-owned company, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will likely be part of that rumored unveiling. On the other hand, there's also a good chance that these rumors are false.

"Apart from the Moto X Phone, consumer electronic pundits are closely watching Google's new Nexus 7 tablet, the rumored Nexus 7 2 manufactured by ASUS - and similar to the Moto X Phone, the tablet computer is expected to arrive this month according to reports citing  filings like FCC, leaks and other 'data,'" reads a recent PopHerald report.

The Moto X press event on July 11 apparently turned out to be nothing more than a rumor, as Motorola said it had nothing planned for that date. This means that Moto X will not make its debut for now, but the Nexus 7 2 is not necessarily tied to Motorola's event. Google could still decide to make its announcement and unveil the second-generation Nexus 7 on July 11 even if Motorola has no plans to unveil its upcoming smartphone powerhouse just yet.

If Google follows the same schedule as last year, the second-generation Nexus 7 should make its debut by the end of the month, rocking a brand-new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system.

An ASUS employee allegedly spilled the beans recently and leaked the specs of the upcoming Nexus 7 2 (ASUS K009) via a chat with a customer. According to that alleged leak, the new Nexus 7 slate should arrive by the end of July with Android 4.3 on board and some more enhancements over the previous iteration.

Google's second-generation Nexus 7 is also expected to sport a 7-inch display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, pack a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro processor clocked at 1.5GHz, and 5-megapixel rear camera.

It is advisable, however, not to trust leaks and speculations too much. It's all in the rumor state until Google makes it official, which means it may or may not prove to be accurate.
