Microsoft is dropping $100 off the price of its Surface Pro tablet for the month of August, just in time for back-to-school season.
The new price cut follows a similar discount for the Surface RT, which was marked down to $349 and $449 for the 32GB and 64GB models, respectively, back in mid-July.
It seems that it's Surface Pro's turn to receive a similar treatment, although the price cuts are not as considerable as those on the Surface RT.
The Verge claims to have received confirmation from Microsoft that the Surface Pro tablet will sport a $100 discount between Aug. 4 and Aug. 29. The offer is available for interested buyers in the U.S., Canada, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The UK or Australia got the Surface RT discounts last month but seem to be left out of the party this time around.
"We've been seeing great worldwide success with Surface RT pricing and keyboard-cover promotions over the past several months and are proud to offer Surface Pro at more affordable prices," the company told The Verge.
Microsoft's own website confirms the promotion, but mentions that interested customers taking advantage of this offer will not get a cover bundled with their purchase.
The new price cuts are just in time for the back-to-school shopping season, which always brings discounts on tablets, notebooks and other devices. Microsoft's move, however, again sparks speculation about the tablets' success.
News about the new Surface Pro discount comes less than a week after Microsoft revealed $863 million in earnings from Surface tablets during fiscal 2013. It may sound sufficient for a first-generation product, but it doesn't cover the $900 accounting hole the company faced from its Surface RT discount.
With the new discounts, the 64GB model of the Surface Pro now drops its price tag from $899 to $799, while the 128GB version drops from $999 to $899. Check out Microsoft's product page for the tablet to learn more about the Surface Pro and take advantage of the new promotion for the month of August. A tiny mention on the website notes that the offer is valid until Aug. 29 but is subject to change, and is available while supplies last. The discount applies only to the 64GB and 128GB models of the Surface Pro.
