Samsung Galaxy Gear Android smartwatch leaks in first images

Samsung will unveil its much-rumored smartwatch, dubbed the Galaxy Gear, at its Unpacked event on Sept. 4, but the first images of the gadget have now leaked.

Highly-anticipated devices always find their way in various leaks ahead of the big announcement and the Samsung Galaxy Gear makes no exception. Leaked specs and features tried to paint a picture of what to expect from the new Android smartwatch from Samsung, but this is the first time that images of the purported device surface.

VentureBeat claims to have obtained access to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch from a developer. The site notes, however, that the prototypes developers receive "don't mirror the final design," but they're not "far off" either.

Moreover, the VentureBeat reported was not allowed to photograph the actual device, so these images don't show the Galaxy Gear itself. Instead, the reporter was able to snap some photos of an internal promotional marketing video for the smartwatch. The Galaxy Gear was apparently created for Samsung "by an independent team working closely" with the company.

According to the site, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Gear is about 3-inch in size and its "quite large" bezels give it "a chunky rectangular shape with rounded corners."

"The wristband is clunky and masculine, large enough to hold speakers in the clasp," the publication further notes. The smartwatch will reportedly establish a connection with smartphone and tablets via Bluetooth, but it will also sport Wi-Fi support so it could work independently.

VentureBeat goes on to list some of the Galaxy Gear's expected specs, including Samsung S Voice for voice commands, integration with a companion Galaxy S smartphone or tablet, pre-loaded Android apps for social media, health tracking and others, call logs, Internet access and a power button on the side. The smartwatch would also reportedly offer an easy-to-use swipe function so users can quickly access apps, the built-in camera and the photo gallery. Call logs will allow users to initiate a call from the smartwatch to the connected Samsung smartphone. The smartwatch is also expected to offer social media integration, allowing users to share things on Facebook or Twitter. The gadget will reportedly last for more than 10 hours on a single charge.

While some of the specs listed by VentureBeat seem to match previous leaks about the device, things are not official just yet. Samsung will take the wraps off its new Galaxy Gear in just two days, however, so it will all become clear soon enough. Stay tuned.
