Mysterious Nexus smartphone spotted in the wild – Is this the Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 KitKat?

A purported Nexus 5 smartphone has been spotted in the wild, running on the recently-announced Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

Google has just unveiled that the next version of its operating system will be Android 4.4 KitKat, and the company traditionally launches each Android build with a new product. This year, KitKat is widely expected to debut on the next-generation Google Nexus smartphone, dubbed the Nexus 5.

While the company has yet to announce the Nexus 5, a new Nexus smartphone has now been spotted in the wild and made its way online in some images and a couple of videos.

"Today we've received the images above showing what looks to be the Nexus 5 in the wild, and it looks identical to pre-production units floating through the FCC and elsewhere," reports 9to5Google. "The tipster also sent along the videos below, which could give us a glimpse at Android 4.4 KitKat running on the Nexus 5, although it looks like the bootup from Google Play Edition phones."

Based on the newly-leaked images, the front of the purported Nexus 5 looks very similar to the Nexus 4. The rear of the device, however, appears to have a rubberized texture, as well as a vertical Nexus logo.

According to 9to5Google, a Google employee left the Nexus handset in question to charge at a bar. Seeing the smartphone unsupervised, a worker at the bar snapped some shots and a couple of short videos of the mysterious device.

The upcoming Nexus 5 is expected to boast high-end specs and features. The smartphone will reportedly sport a 5-inch 1080p FHD display, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked a 2.26GHz, 2GB of RAM, a 10-megapixel rear camera and the impending Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

Google launched its Nexus 4 smartphone, made in collaboration with LG, back in October 2012, and the handset became commercially available in November. The company is expected to follow a similar launch schedule with the next-generation Nexus smartphone, which is also reportedly made by LG.

The latest rumors suggest that the Nexus 5 will make its debut on Oct. 14, but Google has not announced anything so far. Until it becomes official, take all rumors with a grain of salt. In the meantime, check out the video below.
